The War on Women: An Evening of Basic Training

There is a war on women raging across the country. Presidential candidates are speaking out in opposition to basic contraception. Anti-woman legislators around the country are trying to put more and more barriers between women and their reproductive rights. Wisconsin’s governor just pushed through a repeal of his state’s Equal Pay Enforcement Act. Even here in New York, we are having difficulty pushing a pro-woman agenda forward.

Join us and find out how to fight back from an array of featured speakers, including:

  • Jessica Valenti – Author and Co-Founder, Feministing
  • Jamia Wilson – VP of Programs, The Women’s Media Center
  • Joe Rollins – Professor and Political Science Chair, The CUNY Graduate Center
  • Amy Richards – Author and Activist, Soapbox Inc.
Hosted by Sen. Liz Krueger and the Center for the Study of Women and Society at the City University of New York.

Upcoming Judy Dater Exhibition in Los Angeles

On April 14 2012, Thomas Paul Fine Art Gallery in Los Angeles premieres Judy Dater’s most recent work which is based upon her memoir. Judy Dater is a famous female photographer who currently lives in the Bay area. She is best known for her photograph titled “Imogen and Twinka” (1974), the first full frontal female nude to be published in Life magazine. All of her current work focuses on topics of relationships, second-wave feminism, and what it was like for her being a female artist at the peak of second-wave feminism. Self-scrutiny and self-motivation were central themes in Dater’s work in the early 1970s, however in the 1980s she shifted her focus from the female psyche to a critique of the social contracts which hold dominion over one’s individual effort. Dater produced a series of images in which she portrayed many of the proposed roles for women. Dater placed herself in overtly minimal and artificial settings in which she donned absurd costumes which seemed to turn everyday objects into bizarre props. Dater addresses how identity is formed through social constructions, and by ironically donning the appearances of female archetypes Dater confronts the ideology that has confined women for generations.

Les Femmes Folles: VOICE exhibit

Les Femmes Folles: Voice, presents eleven “wild women’s” moving, provocative work that showcases the feelings and experiences of womanhood in our own worlds. Our work engages with a range of subjects, from sweet to seduction, from political to domestic. Addressing such complex matters in a variety of mediums, we aim to challenge the status quo and politics of power and give light and enhance positive communication about this ever-important subject of feminism to complement such worldwide feminist-inspired projects.

Artists of VOICE: …. Sally Deskins, Marcia Joffe-Bouska, Wanda Ewing, Kristin Lubbert, Amy Quinn, Jewel Noll, Melanie Pruitt, Megan Loudon Sanders, Trudie Teijink, Trilety Wade and Ella Weber

Les Femmes Folles: Voice is the third Les Femmes Folles visual exhibition; the original Les Femmes Folles was curated by Wanda Ewing in April 2011, featuring visual art by five regional artists who were women in conjunction with Lit Undressed Presents: The Spirit of the Female Beats at RNG Gallery with the focus on the use of female body in art. The show was nominated for an Omaha Arts and Entertainment Award for Best Group Show 2012. In July 2011, Peerless Gallery in Omaha hosted Les Femmes Folles Presents: A Curated Show Featuring Wanda Ewing and Kim Reid Kuhn, a pop-up exhibition featuring over a dozen regional visual artists who were women. The original show also inspired Les Femmes Folles: a blog celebrating women in art created and still maintained by Sally Deskins in April 2011 featuring interviews and stories with women doing creative work. Sally also hosts other events with her blog like panel discussions, filming, performances and readings celebrating women in art and published the first catalog in March 2012 on blurb.com. She hopes to continue the now tradition of collaborating with women artists and coordinating events and exhibits celebrating women’s experience with VOICE and more.

The Window Sex Project: World Premiere in Harlem!

Sydnie L. Mosley Dances Presents as a part of International Anti-Street Harassment Week, The Window Sex Project World Premiere at the Red Carpet Theater at Taino Towers, 240 East 123rd Street, Harlem, NY 10035. General Admission Seating: $20.00. Tickets sold on Eventbrite.

THE WINDOW SEX PROJECT is a dance-theater work that addresses and tackles the every day practice, in which women are “window shopped,” that is forced to bear unsolicited verbal harassment from men while walking on the street. The Window Sex Project gives voice to these concerns and restores agency to women by equipping them to manage street harassment, and uses the body, the site of harassment, as a mode of political action. The artists join in support of organizers worldwide in order to speak out against gender-based street harassment during International Anti-Street Harassment Week, March 18-24, 2012.

The work places five women of varying races and body types on pedestals in an art gallery setting, forcing audiences to contend with the objectification of the female body in a contemporary society. The project aims to equally celebrate all the bodies illustrating how each woman’s sexuality is unique to her rather than outside perceptions.

The Window Sex Project is a Harlem community arts and performance initiative created in part through workshops over the course of summer 2011 with women ages 18-35. The workshops provided a safe and supportive space for women to voice their concerns and share their experiences about street harassment, learn ways to respond and manage harassment on a day-to-day basis, and feel empowered through shared experience. The final dance work voices their concerns and restores agency by celebrating their bodies in a public artwork by the community for the community.

Start: March 23, 2012
End: March 23, 2012
